SAT Scores for Engineering Schools
The SAT score expected for engineering depends on the institution and program. MIT reports 780–800 Math for the middle half of its Class of 2029 admits; Illinois lists a 1490–1550 total for its three-year Grainger Engineering profile. Neither is an engineering-wide minimum.
Two engineering-relevant profiles
The populations differ: MIT lists Class of 2029 admits and Illinois lists a three-year admitted-student snapshot. Read each range with that label. Do not add MIT’s section endpoints to construct an official total range.
| Institution/profile | Published SAT statistic | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| MIT, Class of 2029 admits | Math 780–800; ERW 740–780 | University-wide, not one engineering major |
| Illinois, three-year Grainger admits | Total 1490–1550 | Engineering-college profile, not an aerospace cutoff |
What score do I need for aerospace engineering?
Find the exact aerospace degree and how students enter it. A university can admit directly to the major, to an engineering college, or to a general first-year program before a later major application. Check that pathway before using its score statistics.
There is no separate SAT aerospace section and no universal aerospace score requirement. If the program publishes no major range, label the available university or engineering-college range accurately. Look for course prerequisites and progression requirements as well as testing rules.
Turn the Math result into a practice plan
Use a recent timed result to choose two skills. For systems, write both equations and label the units before graphing. For functions, distinguish a zero from a maximum and an input from an output. For data, state whether you need an exact relationship or a fitted model.
Try six fresh questions on one weak skill, explain each setup, then mix that skill into a 35-minute module. Review whether the same error survives under the timer. A Math target is useful only when it leads to a specific change in your work.
Retake with a defined purpose
If your Math score is below the published section range at your target institution, identify the repeated misses that could change it. If only an overall total is published, do not infer a Math minimum. Keep Reading and Writing in the plan when it also needs attention.
Compare the next available test date, score-release date and application deadline. A practice improvement can support a retake decision, but a score in the range still does not guarantee engineering admission.

FAQs
Is 750 Math enough for engineering?
It may fit some programs and sit below other institutions’ reported ranges. No single Math score qualifies you for all engineering schools.
What SAT is required for aerospace engineering?
Check the particular university and entry pathway. Aerospace programs do not share one SAT requirement or national cutoff.
