SAT Scores by College Major

There is no national SAT requirement for engineering, business or computer science. Compare the exact university, undergraduate school and program. When a major-specific range is not published, a university-wide range is context rather than a hidden cutoff.

Three admissions structures to distinguish

Before setting a score target, find out whether you apply to the university, an undergraduate school or a specific major. Those are different comparisons.

Admission structureScore evidence to look forExample
University admission before choosing a majorUniversity admitted or enrolled profileMIT’s Class of 2029 section ranges
Admission to an undergraduate schoolSchool-level profile, if publishedIllinois Grainger Engineering and Gies Business
Admission to a named majorMajor profile, if the university publishes oneA specific CS program; do not substitute all engineering

One verified school-level comparison

Illinois publishes a three-year admitted-student snapshot. Its listed SAT middle 50% is 1490–1550 for Grainger Engineering and 1440–1520 for Gies Business, checked October 2, 2026. These are school-level historical distributions, not major minimums or future requirements.

That comparison supports checking the correct school. It does not support adding an arbitrary 50 points to every university range for STEM or assuming humanities applicants receive a lower requirement.

Use section scores without creating a rule

Math preparation matters for quantitative coursework, but a high Math score does not erase the rest of the application. Inspect both sections and your course preparation. A student with 780 Math and 650 Reading and Writing has a different practice need from a student with 700 in each section.

If your college has a published section range, compare with it. If it does not, avoid inventing a Math threshold. At MIT, the Class of 2029 admitted-student middle 50% was 780–800 Math and 740–780 ERW; that is MIT-wide, not a separate CS or aerospace range.

Build a program-specific score note

Write the intended program, direct-entry or later-entry structure, current testing requirement, latest profile year and whether the range covers that program. Mark a field “not published” when necessary. Then choose practice from your own misses.

For an application that requires testing, plan a score submission even if it is below a historical range. For an optional application, check whether scholarships, honors or a particular program have additional rules.

FAQs

Do majors have different SAT minimums?

Some programs can publish their own requirements, but there is no universal major-based SAT minimum. Use the exact program’s official policy.

Can I use a university range for a selective major?

Use it as university-level context and label it that way. It is not evidence of the major’s own distribution or cutoff.
