SAT Scores for Computer Science

There is no universal computer-science SAT cutoff. A university-wide range, an engineering-school range and a direct-entry CS requirement are different pieces of evidence. Check which one your target program actually publishes.

Match the statistic to the CS program

MIT’s Class of 2029 admitted-student profile lists 780–800 Math and 740–780 ERW. Those figures are for MIT admits across intended fields, not a CS-specific threshold. Illinois’s Grainger range describes an engineering college; it should not be relabeled as a standalone CS distribution.

Engineering-school rangeContext for that school’s published cohortAssuming all CS degrees use it

Direct entry and later major selection

Find whether you apply directly to CS, enter an undergraduate school, or choose a major after enrolling. Check any separate internal-transfer or progression rules. Getting into a university does not always promise access to a capacity-limited major.

If no CS SAT distribution is published, write “not published” in your comparison. A stronger applicant pool does not let you calculate a hidden cutoff or automatically add points to the university’s 75th percentile.

Use your Math review to choose the next set

Work from your actual mistakes. If you confuse a parameter with the variable, label each before entering an equation. If a function question asks for an input, solve for the input rather than reporting the output. If a data problem asks for a linear prediction, separate the fitted model from the raw points.

Solve a small fresh set on that skill, explain the setup, and test the same decision in a timed Math module. Keep Reading and Writing practice when its score also limits the total.

A retake comparison that can change your decision

List each program’s testing policy, range population/year, published Math range if any, final accepted test date and your recent fresh practice scores. If the only weak comparison is an invented CS target, replace it with actual evidence.

A high SAT score is one academic signal. It does not prove programming ability or guarantee admission to CS. International applicants should check the same named program’s policy and any separate English-proficiency requirement; the published overall range does not establish a special international CS cutoff.

FAQs

Do I need 1550 for computer science?

Not as a universal rule. A 1550 can be useful at some institutions, but no national CS cutoff exists.

Should I retake a high total with lower Math?

Compare with the institution’s published Math data if available, identify fixable Math errors and check deadlines before deciding.
