SAT exam in India: eligibility, format, and booking

Students in India book SAT Weekend through College Board, choose an available test center, and take the digital test in Bluebook. It tests Reading and Writing and Math. First check that your intended university uses SAT scores; the test is not a replacement for every Indian entrance exam.

What the digital SAT contains

The SAT structure has two Reading and Writing modules totaling 64 minutes and two Math modules totaling 70 minutes, with a 10-minute break between sections. The testing total is 2 hours 14 minutes. Your first module's performance determines the second module's route in that section.

Reading and Writing includes evidence, vocabulary in context, expression, and grammar. Math includes algebra, advanced math, data/problem solving, and geometry/trigonometry. SAT is not a Physics, Chemistry, or commerce-subject exam.

Class 11, Class 12, and after school

Taking the SAT and qualifying for a university are different questions. Choose a date based on readiness, school obligations, and application deadlines rather than treating Class 11 or 12 as a universal admissions condition.

If you have finished school, check whether the college will treat you as a first-year or transfer applicant, especially if you enrolled elsewhere. An SAT score does not resolve that classification or supply missing school credentials.

How to register in India

Book through your own College Board account. A school hosting the exam and a company selling SAT classes are different from the registration service. Paying for tuition does not reserve a test seat.

  1. Check the university's last accepted testing date, then choose a sitting that fits it.
  2. Use your legal name as it appears on the physical ID you will bring. Upload a photo meeting College Board's requirements.
  3. Select your date and India in the center search. Compare the exact campus, address, and available seats during registration.
  4. Choose the center, review the charge, and complete payment. Save the confirmed registration in My SAT.
  5. Install Bluebook on your testing device. Complete exam setup when it opens before your sitting to obtain the admission ticket.

SAT dates and registration deadlines

As of October 5, 2026, the next SAT is November 7, 2026: register by October 23, or by October 27 with the $38 late fee. The same dates apply in the US and abroad. College Board deadlines end at 11:59 p.m. US Eastern Time, not local midnight. A date on the calendar does not mean every center offers it.

The August 22, September 12, and October 3 tests have already been held, so they are not dates you can still book. If you need College Board to lend you a testing device, register and request it at least 30 days before test day. Leave time for score reporting before your application's deadline.

Fees and the INR charge

The base international SAT charge is US $111: $68 registration plus $43 international fee. College Board quotes USD; your card's conversion and foreign-transaction charges determine the INR amount. Do not treat a converted estimate as the checkout price.

Late registration adds $38, so the base late total is $149. A center change costs $34. A date change requires canceling and registering again; canceling costs $34 by the change deadline or $44 until 11:59 p.m. ET on the Thursday before test day. Review the official fee schedule and the actual checkout before paying. Classes, transport, and extra score reports are separate expenses.

College Board adds a $24 test center fee only at the centers on its published list. On October 5, 2026, that August 2026–June 2027 list named centers in Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore, South Korea, and Taiwan, and none in India, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, or Kuwait.

Check your ID before paying

For testing in India, College Board accepts a valid passport or Aadhaar PVC card; an Aadhaar letter must be the original government-issued hard copy. An e-Aadhaar printout or screenshot does not qualify. The ID rules also list the US Common Access Card exception.

Compare your account name with the document now. The admission ticket does not replace ID, and a phone image does not replace the original document.

Check the university's use of the score

A private university may accept SAT as optional evidence or an alternative route, while another program requires JEE or CUET. Ashoka lists optional external tests alongside mandatory assessments. Read the program's current requirements rather than relying on an undated list of 'SAT colleges'.

For overseas applications, check SAT policy and English proficiency separately. 'Test-optional' and 'test-free' are different; verify before paying for a sitting you do not need.

The final test-day check

Use the College Board packing list: charged compatible device with Bluebook installed and setup completed, current admission ticket, physical ID, and pens or pencils. Bring your charging cable and know your College Board sign-in. The embedded calculator is available in Bluebook.

Read your admission ticket for reporting instructions and recheck your center before traveling. Follow the center's local arrival instructions; don't infer a Dubai or Doha start time from the US registration cutoff. A practice center's opening hours are not your SAT reporting time.

Questions before you decide

Can I take the SAT after Class 12?

Yes, finishing Class 12 does not by itself prevent an SAT sitting. Check the university's school qualification and first-year/transfer rules separately.

Is SAT online from home in India?

SAT Weekend is digital but taken at a registered test center. Practicing in Bluebook at home is not the official exam.
