Words in Context

Choose the word that fits the sentence's exact meaning and logic. Predict a plain replacement from the surrounding clues before comparing the choices; a familiar definition may not be the relevant one.

Predict the blank from the sentence's logic

Consider: "The early results looked promising, but later trials ___ that optimism: the treatment produced no measurable benefit." The contrast after "but" and the failed outcome point toward a word meaning reduced or weakened.

A choice such as "tempered" fits that job. "Confirmed" would reverse the logic, and "generated" would describe creating optimism rather than limiting it. Use the evidence after the blank as well as before it.

Match the contextual meaning of a known word

In "The researchers maintained that the pattern was unlikely to be accidental," "maintained" means asserted, not repaired or kept in good condition. The verb acts on a claim, which narrows its meaning.

Read the word with its grammatical partners. What is doing the action, and what receives it? A dictionary meaning that works in a different sentence may fail with the object or clause in this one.

Eliminate choices with the wrong strength or direction

If the passage says a result "suggests" an explanation, a word meaning proves conclusively may overstate it. If a person reluctantly accepts a proposal, a word meaning enthusiastically endorses it changes the attitude.

Do not rank choices by how sophisticated they sound. Compare their direction, intensity, and fit with the surrounding sentence. When two seem close, identify the particular clue that favors one.

Use vocabulary review to sharpen distinctions

After a miss, record the relevant meaning and write a short sentence using it. Also record why the chosen distractor failed: wrong sense, reversed contrast, excessive strength, or wrong grammar.

A useful review entry compares nearby words, such as "qualify" meaning limit a claim and "verify" meaning check it. That contrast gives you a decision to make in the next context rather than a memorized word in isolation.

Check your understanding

Try it yourself

"Unlike the ornate lobby, the upstairs rooms were austere, with bare walls and little furniture." What does "austere" mean here?
