SAT Timing Chart
The standard SAT has 64 minutes of Reading and Writing and 70 minutes of Math, separated by a 10-minute break. That is 2 hours 14 minutes of testing, or 2 hours 24 minutes including the scheduled break.
Standard section and module times
You receive a separate timer for each module. Unused time does not carry forward, and you cannot return to a finished module. Check-in, instructions and any approved accommodations change the total time at the test center.
Use averages as checkpoints, not individual deadlines
Reading and Writing allows seconds per question; Math allows . A short punctuation decision can take less time than an evidence passage. A quick arithmetic problem can leave time for a longer model.
A useful practice checkpoint is roughly halfway through the questions at halfway through the time. After finishing Reading and Writing question 14, aim to have about 16 minutes left. After Math question 11, about 17½ minutes remain. These are pacing targets, not College Board rules.
A stuck-question routine
Read what the question asks and identify the quantity or relationship. If you still have no productive next step after another short attempt, make your best choice, mark it for review and move on. Return while the same module is open.
Try reserving two or three minutes for marked questions. During practice, record whether you left questions unread, rushed the final few or finished with unusable extra time. Change your pacing from that evidence rather than enforcing the same time on every question.
Rehearse the whole sequence
Use one uninterrupted 32-minute Reading and Writing module or 35-minute Math module to test pacing. Before test day, complete a full practice test with the actual 10-minute break so you know how the section transition feels.
Approved accommodations can change timers or breaks. Use your approved Bluebook practice settings if they apply; this chart describes standard timing.
