## Form, Structure, and Sense

Find the sentence's core subject and verb, then check agreement, time, pronoun reference, and modifier placement. Nearby nouns and long interruptions can hide the grammatical relationship.

### Match the verb to the actual subject

"The collection of rare coins is on display." The subject is the singular "collection," not the plural "coins" inside the prepositional phrase. Removing "of rare coins" makes the agreement clear: "The collection is on display."

In "The coins in the collection are on display," the subject is plural "coins," so "are" fits. Find the noun heading the subject rather than the noun closest to the verb.

### Use time clues to choose verb form

"By the time the museum opened, the team had installed the exhibit" uses past perfect for an action completed before another past event. "The museum opened yesterday" needs simple past.

Check whether the blank needs the sentence's main verb. A form such as "installing" cannot serve as the only finite verb in "The team installing the exhibit"; that wording leaves the clause unfinished.

### Give pronouns a clear referent

A pronoun must match the noun it replaces in number and meaning. "The instruments lost their calibration" uses plural "their" for plural "instruments." A sentence mentioning two people may need a name instead of "she" if the reference is unclear.

For possessives, distinguish "its" from "it's": "its surface" shows possession, while "it's" means "it is" or "it has." Expand the contraction to test it in the sentence.

### Attach modifiers to the thing they describe

"Walking through the gallery, Maya noticed a new painting" makes Maya the person walking. "Walking through the gallery, the painting caught Maya's attention" incorrectly attaches the opening phrase to the painting.

Keep list items parallel as well: "to collect, to compare, and to analyze" follows one grammatical pattern. Read the words around the blank as a complete structure, not as isolated answer choices.
