## What Is a Good SAT Score?

A good SAT score is one that serves your college list or a specific scholarship requirement. Use national percentiles for context, then compare your total and section scores with each college's current published ranges and testing policy.

### Define what the score needs to do

Make a short table for your actual colleges: testing required or optional, published middle-50% range and its year, any separate section requirements, and scholarship thresholds. Read the official admissions and scholarship pages; policies can differ within the same university.

The middle 50% runs from the 25th to the 75th percentile of the reported population. A score in that range is neither an admission guarantee nor a rule that applicants outside it are automatically rejected.

### A comparison that produces a decision

Imagine a college reports a 1200–1400 range for enrolled score submitters. A 1300 falls within that reported range. A 1450 is above it, while an 1100 is below it. Those observations identify score context without assigning admission odds.

If a school is test optional, decide using its own guidance and the rest of your application. If testing is required, the choice is how to present and possibly improve the score rather than whether to omit it.

| Question | What to check | What it cannot prove |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Is this strong nationally? | SAT-user percentile and reference group | Fit for one particular college |
| Does it fit my college? | Official range, year and reporting population | Admission probability |
| Should I retake? | A concrete use for a gain and fresh practice evidence | That another sitting will be higher |

### Why one total is not a complete diagnosis

A 1400 could be 700 / 700 or 600 Reading and Writing / 800 Math. Both share a total percentile, but the second split leaves a distinct Reading and Writing opportunity and may matter differently to a program that looks closely at section scores.

Before choosing a target, write the two section scores and name the actual errors behind the weaker one. National labels such as 'strong' do not select tomorrow's practice set.

### A retake needs a reason

Consider a retake when a higher score could meet a written threshold, strengthen a specific application or improve a section the college considers, and when fresh timed practice supports the change.

If your score already serves those uses, more test preparation may have less value than finishing other work. There is no universal retake cutoff at 1400, 1500 or 1550.

### Questions about this score benchmark

#### Is 1200 a good SAT score?

It is above the SAT-user median in College Board's published table. Whether it serves your application depends on your colleges and any specific score requirements.

#### Is 1400 good enough for every college?

No universal score is good enough for every applicant or college. Compare current official ranges and policies; even a score above a range does not guarantee admission.
